I'm getting anxious to be painting flowers and other spring things.....I keep walking around my yard checking to see if my perennial gardens have made it through the winter. My goal with this painting was to show how stripped and unusual these hollyhocks were; and to not be so tight and precise with every little thing. I guess when I am not doing a rendering, I'm always working towards "getting loose" and trying to stay painterly. Sometimes it works, and with this floral I think I captured that.....

This home was in such a beautiful neighborhood; and with a little snooping around, I could tell that this property had a beautiful crab apple tree and some nice climbing roses on the little split rail fence. Sometimes I have to be a super sleuth to figure out what everything would look like with the leaves on the trees and flowers in the pots....it's still early spring here in Colorado, and trees are bare, the grass is still brown, and flowers will not be planted in the pots or gardens until mid-May! One of the fun things about rendering properties this time of year is having fun and using my creative license to design some beautiful summer color in the landscaping.

Painting today was with my Friday painting group and what fun we always have just painting the day away. After several hours of working on a home portrait rendering, I painted this quick little frog using a kitchen spoon rest as a reference. The spoon rest was something my girlfriend bought on a vacation and I just couldn't resist the cute little guy. Thanks for looking and Happy Easter everyone!

I wanted to keep this painting really loose; it's so difficult sometimes not to get overly technical with the details. I love the wishy washy loose look of watercolor like this. It's one of those things that looks so easy. Any artist will tell you that staying "loose" is not easy at all! I think when you do paint loosely, the painting looks so fresh. Thanks for looking.

Painting the day away....home portraits are like little puzzles. This is a home that is not even built yet so I do the rendering from the architectural plans and then "design" a little landscaping. This painting reminds me of a really hot summer sunset; which is not even close to what we have here in Colorado today. Funny how the weather can affect what I choose to paint for the day.....we are expecting 6-10" of snow tonight and I think maybe I'm just not looking forward to that!! Today was mixed media in the studio. Every now and then I have to have a play day and experiment with different art materials. This piece is some encaustic waxes, some inks, oh...I forget what all I played with today but had a great time. With this process, the detail and textures are amazing. Look at these sweet little guys...these two were up for adoption last summer and we thought about it.....but it didn't work out. The picture was so sweet thought; I just had to paint it. Was quite the challenge because the photo was printed on a piece of typing paper and so difficult to see. This painting was so much fun to paint. I was experimenting with oil washes and trying to get a very "glazy" sort of watercolor look. I love the way it turned out; very soft and washy looking; but still full of lots and lots of color. Althought this is not the typical way that I paint with oil , I like it and think I might do a series....thanks for looking.
